What is Sodium Isethionate?

Sodium 2-hydroxyethyl sulfonate (also known as sodium hydroxyethyl sulfonate) is a sodium salt of 2-hydroxyethanesulfonic acid (hydroxyethyl sulfonate), which is used as a hydrophilic head group in detergent active surfactants. Due to its strong polarity and resistance to multivalent ions, it is called hydroxyethyl sulfonate (acyloxyethanesulfonate). It is being studied as a high-yield chemical in the High Production (HPV) Chemical Challenge Program of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Solid sodium 2-hydroxyethyl sulfonate is a colorless, free flowing, non hygroscopic solid that is easily soluble in water and has good biodegradability. Due to the synthesis method, the sample usually contains trace amounts of sodium sulfite or sodium bisulfite, resulting in a pH value of about 10 in the aqueous solution, which is weakly alkaline.

Sodium Isethionate Uses

Sodium isethionate is an organic salt and an important intermediate for pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and daily chemicals.

Sodium isethionate can be used as an amphoteric detergent and as an intermediate for the preparation of surfactants derived from fatty acid sulfonalkyl esters (acyloxyethane sulfonates).

Sodium isethionate can increase the stability of the formula, improve the detergency of hard water, and be smooth on the skin. These characteristics are generally applicable to soap and shampoo formulations in the home care, industrial and public facilities, and personal care markets. Adding this substance to the final product can produce rich foam, reduce soap residue on the skin, and can also be used as the main antistatic agent in shampoo, so it is well received and recognized by consumers.

Application of Sodium Isethionate

Sodium hydroxyethyl sulfonate is a zwitterionic detergent used in detergent soap. In addition to the foam produced by soap, it can also produce dense foam. It is gentle on the skin and not dry. It works equally well in both soft and hard water. It is also an anti-static agent in shampoo.

Sodium hydroxyethyl sulfonate is a zwitterionic detergent and can also be used as an intermediate in the preparation of fatty acid sulfonyl ester (acyloxyethanesulfonate) surfactants. Sodium hydroxyethyl sulfonate can improve the stability of the formula, enhance the cleansing power in hard water, and make the skin smooth. It is used for cleaning agents/detergents, disinfectants, cosmetics, surfactants, shampoo, and bubble baths.

The main use of sodium 2-hydroxyethyl sulfonate is to produce hydroxyethyl sulfonate surfactants. These surfactants are prone to foaming and are particularly gentle, suitable for cleaning sensitive skin, so they are mainly used in baby soap and shampoo. Due to its significant skin compatibility, sodium 2-hydroxyethyl sulfonate was added to soap and liquid skin cleansers in amounts of up to 15 parts by weight.

It is easy to obtain so-called biological buffers such as HEPES, MES, PIPES, etc. from sodium 2-hydroxyethyl sulfonate.

Adding 2-hydroxyethyl sulfonic acid to the electroplating solution can achieve higher current density and lower concentration than the expensive methanesulfonic acid, while improving appearance.

Purification Method of Sodium Isethionate

First, add fresh sodium bisulfite that has passed the analysis into the preparation kettle, and prepare a 35wt% aqueous solution with distilled water at room temperature and normal pressure.

2857Kg (concentration 35wt%) of the prepared sodium bisulfite solution is sent to the ethoxylation reactor. After nitrogen replacement and temperature increase, ethylene oxide is added at 90℃ to start the reaction. The temperature is controlled at 90-100℃ and the pressure is 0-0.1MPag (gauge pressure). After adding 500Kg of ethylene oxide, mature at 90-100℃ for 30 minutes and unload.

The crude product synthesized in the previous step (concentration 40-45wt%) is sent to a double-effect continuous evaporation recrystallizer, which is operated in a downstream manner, with continuous feeding and intermittent discharging. That is, the dilute solution first enters the first-effect evaporator, and after preliminary concentration, the concentration reaches 55-60wt%. The concentrated solution enters the second-effect evaporator, and is further concentrated and evaporated to 72-75wt%. Then the concentrated solution enters the continuous crystallizer, and after uniform cooling to 20-40℃ for crystallization, the slurry enters the centrifuge for centrifugal separation, and the solid enters the next process. The mother liquor returns to the second-effect evaporator to continue to participate in evaporation and concentration. When the ethylene glycol content in the product reaches less than 0.1%wt, it is considered qualified. Through analysis and detection, the product purity is greater than 99.5wt%.

For a small amount of residual liquid that cannot be crystallized, 3 times the solvent is used for extraction. The extractant used is anhydrous ethanol. The sodium isethionate product is precipitated in the anhydrous ethanol. A small amount of water and organic impurities, such as ethylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, and isethionate esters, will enter the liquid phase ethanol, and then enter the centrifuge for centrifugal separation. Finally, the crystals are dried at 120°C in a disc dryer to remove a small amount of residual solvent impurities and moisture in the product. The extractant ethanol used is recycled and reused. The extractant ethanol can be distilled and recycled.
