What is Saccharins?
Pure saccharin is a kind of sweetener that is non-toxic, non-caloric, non-nutritive, and not absorbed by the human body. Take advantage of its sweetness, as a food additive, instead of sugar. The “saccharin” that can be bought on the market is actually its sodium salt, that is, sodium saccharin. After being ingested by humans, saccharin is excreted with urine and feces, but excessive consumption can cause poisoning. FAO/WHO (United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization/United Nations World Health Organization) stipulated in 1994 that the allowable daily intake of human body weight was 0-5 mg/kg.
Use of Saccharin
- Non-nutritive sweeteners. The sodium or ammonium salt is generally used. But it can slowly dissolve in the mouth, so it is suitable for chewing gum. The maximum dosage is 0.05g/kg.
- Saccharin, or benzoyl sulfonimide, is an intermediate of the fungicide allyl thiazole and the herbicides metsulfuron, tribenuron, tribensulfuron, and chlorimuron.
- Mainly used in the production of pesticide intermediates and the production of sodium saccharin.
- Mammal sweet tastant; used as inhibitor of phosphotransferase and phosphohydrolase; used to test thallium.
How to Distinguish Saccharin and White Sugar?
The main uses of saccharin are: as a curing accelerator for anaerobic adhesives and as an accelerator for unsaturated polyester resins, and also for the preparation of complex redox initiators, such as tert-butyl hydroperoxide/n-butylamine/saccharin. As edible saccharin is harmful to human health, some developed countries in the West have strictly controlled the use of saccharin. The control standard is generally no more than 5% of the total sugar consumption, and it is mainly used for industrial purposes such as toothpaste.
