What is Trans-Ferulic acid?
Ferulic acid is a kind of hydroxyphenylacrylic acid. It is a rich phenolic phytochemical component in plant cell wall. For example, it exists in the covalently linked side chain of arabinoxylan
Ferulic acid in supplements usually comes from grains. Some herbal products used in traditional Chinese medicine, such as Angelica sinensis, raw hemp and Ligusticum chuanxiong, also contain high concentrations of ferulic acid
Trans-ferulic acid is a natural isomer of ferulic acid, which is used as antioxidant and preservative in food and beverage industry. It is the main phenolic acid in rye and wheat grains.
Trans-Ferulic acid Uses
- In several different studies, trans-ferulic acid was used as part of the complex to stabilize or increase the absorption of drugs or vitamins. Its chemical properties make it both an antioxidant and a metabolite of eukaryotes in plants.
- For laboratory applications, it is used as a matrix for proteins in MALDI mass spectrometry and as a reagent for the synthesis of vanillin and other cyclic molecules.
- Trans-ferulic acid can also be used for esterification of methacrylated dextran, which itself can form polymerization.
