Basic Info

What is Myrcene?

Myrcene, also known as myrcene terpenes, is a volatile aromatic compound. Myrcene is not unique to bay leaf essential oil and is found in many essential oils such as juniper berry, cypress, clary sage, blue tansy, and frankincense. It is widely used in the perfume industry, or as a food additive in food and beverages. Myrcene is known for its medicinal properties such as analgesic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, analgesic, etc.

Myrcene was first discovered as early as 1969. Several decades later, (Rao et al., 1990) was the first scientific team to study the pharmacological effects of myrcene, especially for its anti-injury ability. In recent years, studies have found that essential oils containing myrcene have melanin activity inhibitory and antioxidant effects (Matsuura et al., 2006; Andrade et al., 2013; Donati et al., 2015).

Skin aging is a problem that society attaches great importance to today. Although the skin has a self-defense system to deal with the reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the natural aging process, excessive and long-term exposure to ultraviolet rays will overwhelm the skin’s defense system, leading to oxidation, aging and skin damage.

In the experiment of UVB irradiating cells, myrcene has a protective effect, can inhibit the production of ROS, and at the same time inhibit the value of MMP-1 and MMP-3 and the inflammatory factor IL-6, so as to protect the skin from UVB-induced photodamage. In addition, myrcene increases collagen production, which is also highly valuable for skin maintenance.

Myrcene Uses

  • GB 2760-1996 stipulates that it is allowed to use edible spices. It is mainly used to prepare mixed fruit and citrus essence.
  • Myrcene is a suitable synthetic standard, which is used to identify E – Laurenol (2-methyl-6-methylene-E-2,7-octadien – 1-01) as the main hindgut component of Eurasian bark beetle Ips duplex by GC-MS.
  • Myrcene is a hydrocarbon synthetic perfume. Mainly used in cologne perfume and deodorant, it is also an important raw material for synthesizing terpene synthetic perfume.
  • Used in the spice and essence industry
Myrcene is an intermediate used in perfume industry. It is unstable in air and easy to polymerize. The sample is stabilized by adding alkyl phenol or tocopherol. Therefore, as an intermediate for the preparation of menthol, citral, citronellol, citronellal, geraniol, nerol, linalool and other essence and fragrance chemicals, it has higher value. Laurene is converted to laurylenol, which is another fragrance found in lavender. 1,3-diene is hydrogenated with diethylamine, and then hydrolyzed and palladium catalyzed to remove amine.

Myrcene also brings the aroma of pepper and balsam to beer.

Since October 2018, the FDA of the United States has withdrawn the authorization to use myrcene as a synthetic flavoring agent in food, but has not considered the continuous position that the substance will not pose a risk to public health under the conditions of its intended use.

Does Myrcene Make you Sleepy?

The herbal medicine containing laurylene has been used as a sleeping aid in folk medicine for a long time. Lemongrass tea, rich in myrcene, is used as a sedative and muscle relaxant in Mexico. As the second largest hops planting country in the world (the first in the United States), Germans usually use hop preparations rich in myrcene as sleeping aids. However, it is not clear whether there are any controlled studies that confirm the causal effect of myrcene in promoting human sleep; We do not know that there are any well controlled human clinical trials that can clearly demonstrate the sedative effect of laurene.

A limited number of rodent studies have shown that high doses of myrcene may have a muscle relaxant effect. The same study also showed that myrcene could increase the sleep time of mice, but only if it was used in combination with an anesthetic with strong sedative effect. However, animal studies are not usually translated into humans, so more research is needed before we can clearly show whether laurcene can produce sedative effects, especially at the level commonly seen in commercial cannabis products.

Can Myrcene Relieve Pain and Ianflammation?

Lemongrass tea, which contains a large amount of myrcene, has played an important role in Brazilian folk medicine due to its claimed anti anxiety and analgesic properties. In 1990, Brazilian scientists first issued the statement that myrcene alleviates pain. They concluded that myrcene alleviates pain by increasing opioid chemicals in the brain and spinal cord itself, but this has been controversial. More work needs to be done to prove whether myrcene has real human analgesic properties.

More research is needed to support the potential anti-inflammatory effects of myrcene. The evidence for the role of myrcene in reducing inflammation mainly comes from animal studies.
