What is Magnesium Sulfate?
The chemical formula of magnesium sulfate is MgSO4, and the formula weight is 120. White crystals, it has a variety of crystalline hydrates, among which MgSO4·7H2O is called Epsom salt, and MgSO4·H2O is called magnesium sulfate. The formula weight of magnesium sulfate heptahydrate is 246.46, colorless orthorhombic or monoclinic prism crystals, and the density is 1.68g/cm3. Weathering in dry air, easily soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol, melts in crystal water at 68°C, loses 6 crystal water at 150°C, and generates magnesium sulfate, loses all crystal water at 250°C and becomes anhydrous, anhydrous The water density is 2.66g/cm3, the melting point is 1124°C, and it has a bitter and salty taste. It is used as analytical reagent and mordant, also used in tanning, papermaking, ceramic industry, etc., and can also be used as oral laxative. It can be prepared by reacting sulfuric acid with magnesium oxide, magnesium hydroxide or magnesium carbonate.
When magnesium sulfate is used as a volumetric laxative and anticonvulsant, oral administration of sulfate ions and magnesium ions is not easily absorbed by the intestinal wall, which increases the osmotic pressure in the intestines, prevents water absorption in the intestines, increases the volume of the intestines, and the intestines are blocked. Dilation, so as to stimulate the intestinal wall to increase peristalsis and defecation. It is used to treat constipation, eliminate gastrointestinal poisons and catharsis after taking anthelmintics. After intravenous or intramuscular injection, because magnesium ions have a blocking effect on neuromuscular junction conduction, it has anticonvulsant effect, and is used to treat equine diaphragmatic spasm and relieve muscle rigidity symptoms of tetanus. If the dosage is too large or the intravenous injection speed is too fast, the blood pressure will drop suddenly and the respiratory depression will be suppressed. Immediately intravenous injection of 5% calcium chloride or calcium gluconate should be rescued.
Magnesium Sulfate Uses
Magnesium sulfate is a cofactor for many enzymes. It has an important relationship with muscle contraction and nerve conduction. It has anticonvulsant (relieving eclampsia, tetanus), dilating blood vessels, quickly and strongly lowering blood pressure, correcting hypomagnesemia, and is also used for catharsis and choleresis (see digestive system drugs). It is also currently used for arrhythmia and to reduce the toxicity of digitalis in heart failure.
- Catharsis effect: take it orally, drink plenty of water when using it.
- Choleretic effect: Oral administration of high-concentration (33%) solution can stimulate the duodenal mucosa to relax the sphincter of the common bile duct, contract the gallbladder, and promote bile discharge.Effects on the central nervous system: Injecting this product can inhibit the central nervous system, block peripheral neuromuscular junctions to produce sedative, antispasmodic, and skeletal muscle relaxation effects, and can also reduce intracranial pressure.
- Effects on the central nervous system: Injecting this product can inhibit the central nervous system, block peripheral neuromuscular junctions to produce sedative, antispasmodic, and skeletal muscle relaxation effects, and can also reduce intracranial pressure.
- The effect on the cardiovascular system: when given by injection, excessive magnesium ions can directly relax the smooth muscle of peripheral blood vessels, dilate blood vessels and lower blood pressure.
- Anti-inflammation and anti-swelling effect: Applying 50% solution of this product to hot compress the affected area can reduce inflammation and swelling.

Application of Magnesium Sulfate
Magnesium sulfate can be used externally (as purgative salt) and orally.
It is mainly used externally as a bath salt formula, especially suitable for foot bath and relieving foot pain. It is said that this bath can also relieve and accelerate the recovery of muscle pain, soreness or injury. The potential effects of magnesium sulfate on health are reflected in medical research on the effects of magnesium on resistance to depression, and as an analgesic for migraine and chronic pain.
Magnesium sulfate has been studied for the treatment of asthma, preeclampsia and eclampsia.
Magnesium sulfate is a common component of concentrated salt solution used in isolation tank, and its specific gravity can be increased to about 1.25 – 1.26. This high density allows a person to float effortlessly on the water surface of a closed water tank, eliminating as many external senses as possible.
In the UK, a drug called “Paint Paste” containing magnesium sulfate and phenol can be used to remove small sores or local infections and debris.
In agriculture, magnesium sulfate is used to increase the content of magnesium or sulfur in soil. It is most commonly used in potted plants or magnesium deficient crops such as potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, peppers, lemons and roses. The advantage of magnesium sulfate over other magnesium containing soil improvers (such as dolomitic lime) is its high solubility, which also allows foliar fertilization. Compared with weak alkaline solution, the pH value of magnesium sulfate solution is also close to that of magnesium salt found in neutral limestone; Therefore, the use of magnesium sulfate as the magnesium source of soil will not significantly change the pH value of soil. Contrary to the widely held view that magnesium sulfate can control pests and slugs, help seeds germinate, blossom more, improve nutrient absorption and is harmless to the environment, it has no so-called claim except for correcting magnesium deficiency in soil If used excessively, magnesium sulfate will even pollute the water.
Before the development of chelation therapy, magnesium sulfate has always been used as a drug to treat lead poisoning, because people hope that any ingested lead can be precipitated by magnesium sulfate and then cleared from the digestive system. In the early to mid 20th century, the application was widely used in veterinary medicine; Epsom salts have been used for agricultural purposes in many farms and are often used to treat farm animals that inadvertently ingest lead.
Magnesium sulfate reacts with magnesium oxide and magnesium sulfate solution to prepare special cement, which has good bonding ability and is more wear-resistant than Portland cement. This cement is mainly used to produce lightweight insulation boards. Its use is limited by its waterproofness.
According to ASTM C88, magnesium sulfate (or sodium) is also used to test the soundness of aggregates when there is no record of the use of materials exposed to actual weathering conditions. This test is completed by repeatedly soaking in saturated solution, and then drying in the oven to dehydrate the salt precipitated in the permeable pore space. The internal expansion force comes from the rehydration of salt during re immersion, simulating the expansion of water when it freezes.
Magnesium sulfate is also used to test the resistance of concrete to external sulfate attack (ESA).
Magnesium sulfate heptahydrate is also used to maintain the magnesium concentration in marine aquariums containing a large number of stony corals, because it will be slowly depleted during calcification. In marine aquariums lacking magnesium, it is difficult to control the concentration of calcium and alkalinity, because there is not enough magnesium to stabilize these ions in brine and prevent them from spontaneously settling into calcium carbonate.
The Usage of Magnesium Sulfate
- Oral catharsis
50% magnesium sulfate solution is not absorbed when taken orally, and a certain osmotic pressure is formed in the intestine to keep a large amount of water in the intestine, which stimulates intestinal peristalsis and defecation. Clinically, it is often used for intestinal examination or preoperative preparation, removal of intestinal toxins, and also for catharsis of some anthelmintics.
Usage: 10 ml of 50% magnesium sulfate solution, take it on an empty stomach in the morning, and drink 100-400 ml of water at the same time. - Oral choleretic
Oral administration of high-concentration (33%) magnesium sulfate solution, or direct infusion into the duodenum with a catheter can stimulate the duodenal mucosa, reflexively cause the relaxation of the common bile duct sphincter, contraction of the gallbladder, promote gallbladder emptying, and produce choleretic effect. Clinically used for obstructive jaundice and chronic cholecystitis.
Usage: (33%) magnesium sulfate solution, 10 ml each time, three times a day, before meals or between meals. - Injection to suppress central excitation
Increasing the concentration of magnesium ions in the extracellular fluid can inhibit the central nervous system, reduce the release of acetylcholine from the motor nerve endings, and block the peripheral neuromuscular junction, thereby producing sedative, antispasmodic, and relaxing skeletal muscles. Internal pressure, clinically used for anticonvulsions, eclampsia, uremia, tetanus, hypertensive encephalopathy and acute renal hypertensive crisis.
Usage: Intramuscular injection of 25% magnesium sulfate injection, 4-10 ml each time; or dilute 10 ml of 25% magnesium sulfate injection with 5%-10% glucose injection to 1% or 5% concentration and then instill intravenously. - Injection to dilate blood vessels
Excessive injection of magnesium ions can directly relieve peripheral vascular smooth muscle, cause impulse transmission disorder of sympathetic ganglion, thereby dilate blood vessels, lower blood pressure, and treat angina pectoris.
Usage: Dilute 10ml of 10% solution with 10ml of 5%~10% glucose injection and inject slowly intravenously, once a day. - External application anti-inflammatory and detumescence
50% magnesium sulphate solution is applied externally to hot compress the affected part, which can reduce inflammation and detumescence, and is used to treat phlebitis.
The action principle of magnesium sulfate wet compress with medicinal liquid extravasation: 50% magnesium sulfate solution is a hypertonic solution for interstitial fluid, and local wet compress can generate high osmotic pressure. It can be sucked out within a short period of time to reduce swelling, thereby reducing the damage of edema to local tissues and playing a local therapeutic role.
The principle of magnesium sulfate hot compress can reduce swelling: because magnesium sulfate can antagonize calcium ions, and calcium ions are involved in smooth muscle contraction, so magnesium sulfate can relax skin and subcutaneous tissue vascular smooth muscle (note that it is not vascular endothelial cells), reduce capillary blood pressure, Reduce local exudation and edema. The smooth muscle content of large blood vessels is small, so it is mainly used for superficial inflammation.
