Leucine is one of the twenty basic amino acids, which are isomers of isoleucine. In nutrition, leucine is an essential amino acid for the human body. Leucine is the most common amino acid found in proteins and is important for normal development in infants and children and for nitrogen balance in adults. It is speculated that leucine may play an important role in maintaining muscle mass by balancing the biochemical and decomposing methods of proteins. The main sources of leucine are: whole grains, milk, dairy products, eggs, pork, beef, chicken, beans, and leafy vegetables.
