Diethyl maleate is an intermediate of a polymer compound monomer, a pesticide, a pharmaceutical, a fragrance, and a water quality stabilizer (organic polycarboxylic acid phosphonic acid compound). Mainly used in the production of organophosphorus pesticide malathion (marathon).
Use It is used in the preparation of organophosphate insecticide malathion in pesticides. It is also an intermediate for pharmaceuticals, perfumes and water stabilizers (organic polycarboxylic acid phosphonic acid compounds); it can also be used to produce spices.

The production method is obtained by esterification of maleic anhydride and ethanol in the presence of sulfuric acid; and can also be obtained by exchange conversion of a cation exchange resin as a catalyst. The industrial product content of diethyl maleate is ≥98%, and the product consumes 585 kg of maleic anhydride (95%) and 604 kg of ethanol (95%) per ton of product.
Production method The preparation method is mainly prepared by esterification of maleic anhydride and ethanol in the presence of sulfuric acid.
This process has two kinds of benzene esterification and phenol-free esterification under normal pressure.
(1) Benzene esterification at atmospheric pressure
A certain amount of benzene and ethanol are added to the esterification reaction pot, maleic anhydride is added, concentrated sulfuric acid is added dropwise under stirring, and steam is heated by a jacket, and the reactant is subjected to esterification reaction at about 75 °C. The produced water is removed by ternary azeotropic distillation with benzene and ethanol, and the upper layer of benzene and ethanol are returned to the reaction vessel. After about 13~14 hours, when the temperature of the top of the distillation column rises to 68.2 °C, the water level in the lower layer of the separator no longer rises, indicating that the water in the reaction pot has completely evaporated, and the esterification reaction is completed. The reflux was stopped, and distillation was continued to 95 to 100 ° C, and benzene and ethanol were distilled off. The mixture was cooled to a temperature of about 50 ° C, neutralized with a 5% aqueous sodium carbonate solution, and after washing with water, the residual benzene and ethanol were removed in vacuo to obtain the product diethyl maleate.
(2) Negative pressure without phenyl esterification
The maleic anhydride and the ethanol are esterified under the action of sulfuric acid, and the ethanol and the water formed by the reaction are taken out in a gaseous state under a certain vacuum and temperature, and then the ethanol is refluxed and esterified by a fractionation tower to make the reaction tend to be complete. This method can shorten the reaction cycle, improve the yield and product quality, and improve the operating environment. Most domestic manufacturers use this method.
Further, it is also possible to carry out exchange conversion with a cation exchange resin as a catalyst to obtain diethyl maleate.
