1. Preparation method: In a reaction flask equipped with a stirrer, a reflux condenser, and a thermometer, 32.5 g of phosphorus pentoxide and 85% of orthophosphoric acid 68 mL were added, and the mixture was cooled to room temperature with stirring. Potassium iodide 166 g (1.0 mol), 22.5 (0.25 mol) freshly distilled 1,4-butanediol are added
(2) (bp 228 to 230°C or 133 to 135°C/2.4kPa). The reaction was stirred at 100-120°C for 4 hours. Cool to room temperature, add 75 mL of water and 130 mL of ether. The ether layer was separated, decolorized by adding 25 mL (10%) of sodium thiosulfate solution, washed with cold saturated saline, and dried on an anhydrous basis. After distilling off the ether, distillation under reduced pressure and collecting fractions at 110°C/800 Pa yields 1,4-diiodobutane.
(1) 165 g, yield 84%. Note: 1 It is also possible to use THF instead of 1,4-butanediol.
