Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is organic sulfide compound. It is colorless, odorless and transparent liquid at room temperature. It is a kind of moisture absorption combustible liquid. It has characteristics of high polarity, high boiling point, non-proton, mixed with water, low toxicity and good heat stability. It is soluble in ethanol, propanol, benzol, chloroform and many organic matters. 

It was known as [Omnipotent Solvent” Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) can be widely used as solvent and reaction reagent, especially as processing solvent and laddering solvent in the acrylonitrile polymerization reaction, and synthetic solvent and laddering solvent for polyurethane, also for polyamide, polyimide, polysulfone resin, aromatic hydrocarbon, butadiene and Chlorofluoroaniline etc.

Moreover, Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) has the functions of anti-inflammatory analgesic, diuresis and mitigation. It is added in dugs as analgesia ingredient. 

Usage: 

1. Dimethylsulfoxide is used as organic solvent, reaction medium and organic synthesis intermediate. Wide range of uses. With a high selective extraction capacity, used as acrylic resin and polysulfone resin polymerization and condensation solvent, polyacrylonitrile and acetate fiber spinning solvent, the separation of alkanes and aromatic solvents for aromatic hydrocarbons, Butadiene extraction, acrylic spinning, plastic solvents and organic synthetic dyes, pharmaceutical and other industrial reaction medium. Medicine, there is anti-inflammatory analgesic effect of the skin has a strong penetration.
2. DMSO is a solvent, penetrant and synergist for pesticides and fertilizers. It has been reported abroad that antibiotics are dissolved in DMSO to treat fruit tree rot, and insecticides are dissolved in DMSO to kill heart-eating insects in trees and fruits, and 05‰ solution is used to spray soybeans during the flowering period to increase yield by 10% to 15%. Adding 5‰ DMSO to the fertilizer solution is more likely to cause personal poisoning.
3. It has been used in fruit tree mold disease in China. In the plant experiment, the non-penetrating drugs and dyes were formulated into DMSO aqueous solution, and the trunk was smeared. After 12 hours, it was found that the branches, leaves, rhizomes and fruits were all contained or colored, and the detection results disappeared after 24 hours. It shows that the drugs and pigments dissolved in DMSO can penetrate and circulate, and can also be excreted through metabolism. This characteristic shows the application prospect of DMSO in agriculture, which needs to be studied in the future.
4. The freezing point of pure DMSO is 18. 45°C, DMSO containing 40% water does not freeze at -60°C, and DMSO exotherms when mixed with water and snow. This property makes DMSO useful as a component of automotive antifreeze, brake fluid, and hydraulic fluid. Ethylene glycol antifreeze is no longer suitable for use at low temperatures over -40°C.
