Basic Info

What is Dibutyltin Dilaurate?

Dibutyltin dilaurate is an organotin additive. Dibutyltin dilaurate is a light yellow or colorless oily fluid at space temperature level and formed at reduced temperature level. White crystal, can be utilized in PVC plastic additives, has outstanding lubricity, openness, as well as weather resistance. Excellent resistance to sulfide air pollution. It can be utilized as a stabilizer in soft transparent items, as a high-efficiency lubricant in tough clear items, as well as can also be made use of as a catalyst for the crosslinking response of acrylate rubber and carboxyl rubber, the synthesis of polyurethane foam as well as polyester, space temperature level vulcanized silicone rubber driver.

In terms of its structure, the molecule of dibutyltin dilaurate is composed of two laurate groups and two butyls connected to a tin (IV) atom. The molecular geometry of tin is tetrahedron. Based on the crystal structure of related bis (bromobenzoic acid ester), the oxygen atom of carbonyl group is weakly bound to the tin atom.

The current general synthesis process is: take tetrabutyltin and tin tetrachloride as raw materials to react to obtain dibutyltin dichloride, then dibutyltin dichloride is hydrolyzed in caustic soda solution to obtain dibutyltin oxide, and finally dibutyltin dichloride Oxidation and dehydration condensation of lauric acid produce dibutyltin dilaurate. Toxic dust will be generated in the synthesis process, and a large amount of waste water will be generated at the same time, which will affect human health and the environment.

Dibutyltin Dilaurate Uses

Dibutyltin dilaurate is used as a paint additive. It is also included in pet feed to get rid of cecal worms, roundworms and tapeworms in chickens and also turkeys, and to prevent or treat hexafilariasis and also coccidiosis.

Dibutyltin dilaurate is a catalyst with strong gel properties, which can be used in elastomers, adhesives, sealants, coatings, rigid foam, molded foam, RIM, etc. It can be used with amine catalysts for high-speed production of high-density structural foam, spraying rigid foam, and rigid foam sheet.

Dibutyltin dilaurate is also a heat stabilizer, mainly used in the processing of PVC soft products, as a catalyst for silicone rubber, as a light and heat stabilizer for polyamide and phenolic resin, etc.

Application of Dibutyltin Dilaurate

Dibutyltin dilaurate can be used as a heat stabilizer for polyvinyl chloride. It is the earliest variety used in organotin stabilizers. Its heat resistance is not as good as butyltin maleate, but it has excellent lubricity, weather resistance and transparency. It has good compatibility with plasticizers, no blooming, no vulcanization pollution, and no adverse effects on heat sealing and printing. And because it is liquid at room temperature, its dispersibility in plastics is better than that of solid stabilizers.

Dibutyltin dilaurate is mainly used in soft transparent products or semi-soft products, and the general dosage is 1-2%. It has a synergistic effect when used in combination with metal soaps such as cadmium stearate and barium stearate or epoxy compounds. In hard products, this product can be used as a lubricant and used together with organotin maleate or organotin mercaptide to improve the fluidity of the resin material. Compared with other organotins, the initial coloring property of this product is relatively high, which will cause yellowing and discoloration. The product can also be used as a catalyst in the synthesis of polyurethane materials and as a curing agent for silicone rubber.

In order to improve the thermal stability, transparency, compatibility with resins, and improve the impact strength of this product when used in hard products, many modified varieties have been developed. Generally, fatty acids such as lauric acid are added to pure products, and some epoxy esters or other metal soap stabilizers are added.

Preparation of Dibutyltin Dilaurate

  • Preparation of Iodobutane
Place 1.4 g of red phosphorus and 8.8 g of n-butanol in a three-necked flask, stir, heat in a water bath to about 90°C, keep warm, put 9.5 g of iodine into the reaction flask within 60 min, and heat up to reflux temperature. Reaction 3.5 h. Stop heating, and add 25 mL of water when the temperature drops to about 90°C. Iodobutane can be obtained after distillation.
  • Preparation of diiododi-n-butyltin
Add 3 g of tin powder, 13 g of iodobutane and 0.7 g of tetrabutylammonium bromide into a three-necked flask, start stirring, raise the temperature to about 130 °C, react for 4 h, cool down to 70 °C, add 30 mL of 10 % hydrochloric acid, heated to 60-70°C, stirred for 10 min, and distilled. The residue was transferred into a separatory funnel and allowed to stand for stratification. The lower layer was a reddish-brown liquid containing diiododi-n-butyltin.
  • Preparation of di-n-butyltin dilaurate
Dissolve 1.7 g of sodium hydroxide in 7 mL of water and set aside. Add 8 g of lauric acid, heat it to about 60°C with an oil bath, and stir to dissolve it into a liquid state. Sodium hydroxide was added slowly in about 60 min, and after the addition was completed, the reaction was kept at 60°C for 30 min with stirring. Add 10 g of diiododibutyltin, raise the temperature to about 90°C, and continue the reaction for 2 h. Stand still and cool down, add 20mL water and 20mL toluene to the reactant, and separate the water layer. Put it into a three-necked flask, and heat and dehydrate under the reduced pressure of a water jet pump. Keep the distillation at about 120°C, and stop the operation until no water and low boiling point substances are evaporated. Available di-n-butyltin laurate.
