Benzoyl peroxide is a peroxide with the chemical formula of C14 H10O4 and a molecular weight of 242.23.

Benzoyl Peroxide is a diacyl-peroxide and is composed of benzoyl groups connected by peroxide (-O -O). The peroxide bond structure is responsible for its high reactivity. It is a powerful organic oxidant, and a key initiator of radicals.

Benzoyl peroxide is a light almond-like odor when it’s at room temperature. Its melting point is between 103-106 degrees Celsius. However, if heated above this temperature it can decompose.

It is soluble organic solvents such as benzene, chloroform and ethanol. The density is about 1.33g/cm3. The product can be stored in a form containing 25-30% water or diluted with an inert material to a safe concentration.

It is used to polymerize monomers like polyvinyl acetate, polyacrylonitrile and polyacrylate.

BPO is used as a curing and crosslinking agent during the curing of unsaturated polymer resins. It is also widely used to produce composite materials, such as artificial marble and fiberglass products. It is also used to vulcanize and crosslink silicone rubber, fluororubber and as an initiator for organic glass adhesives. It can be used in the rubber industry to crosslink linear molecular polymer chains into a three-dimensional structure. This gives rubber products excellent mechanical properties and high heat resistance.

2. The field of health and medicine

In dermatology, Benzoyl Peroxide has been approved in the United States for mild to moderate acne since 1960.

Benzoyl Peroxide’s mechanism of action has three functions. First, it kills Propionibacterium Acnes by releasing ecological oxygen. Second, it dissolves keratin and promotes the shedding of Keratinocytes near the opening of the hair follicle. Third, mild exfoliation is performed to reduce sebum production.

Clinically, gels, creams, or lotions containing concentrations of 2,5%, 5%, and 10% are used. The 2.5% concentration has a higher efficacy, but is less irritating. It can be combined with drugs like clindamycin erythromycin and adapalene in order to increase therapeutic efficacy.

It is usually used 1-2 times per day by patients, and they show significant improvements after 4-6 weeks. Side effects can include dry skin, flakes, a burning sensation and more. These side effects usually subside with continued use. Benzoyl Peroxide is used in dental bleaching agents as well.

3. Fine chemicals for industrial applications

Benzoyl Peroxide is used in many different industrial fields. It can be used as a bleaching agent and strong oxidant for the bleaching of textiles, oils, waxes etc. Benzoyl Peroxide is used in organic synthesis as an initiator of the halogenation reactions of allyl or benzyl groups as well as a benzate or oxidant to aromatic rings.

It can be used as an additive in cross coupling reactions to increase reaction yield. It was used in the past as a bleaching agent for hair, but this has been reduced due to its potential for damaging the hair. It is important to note that Benzoyl Peroxide can have a strong bleaching action on fabrics. Avoid contact with clothing while using this product.

In the food industry, benzoyl peroxide is widely used to improve and whiten flour.
