What is 5-Amino-O-Cresol?
5-Amino-o-cresol is used as an oxidizing dye coupling agent in the manufacture of cosmetics hair dyes. According to the data of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the annual production of 5-amino-o-cresol is 10000 to 100000 pounds.
5-Amino-o-cresol is a compound used as aminophenol in analytical chemistry. It reacts with ethylenediamine to form a red dye called 5-aminonaphthalene-2,7-disulfonic acid (5ANDS). The reaction solution can be used to identify the presence of bacterial DNA. 5-Amino-o-cresol has been proved to have genotoxic effects, which may lead to skin cancer or skin damage. This chemical also has toxicological properties and can cause skin irritation at high concentrations.

Preparation of 5-Amino-O-Cresol
The invention provides 5-amino-o-cresol (hair dye intermediate) and a preparation method thereof. The hair dye intermediate is composed of 5-nitrotoluidine, sodium nitrite, 98% concentrated sulfuric acid, active nickel and ethanol. The preparation method comprises the following steps:
(1) Dissolving sodium nitrite in water twice as large as sodium nitrite to prepare sodium nitrite solution.
(2) Dilute 98% concentrated sulfuric acid to 40% aqueous solution, add 5-nitrotoluidine to the aqueous solution, slowly add the prepared sodium nitrite solution, and hydrolyze 5-amino-o – to cresol at elevated temperature.
(3) The intermediate 5-amino-o-cresol obtained in step (2) is mixed with ethanol and active nickel. After the reaction, it is heated and pressurized, filtered while hot, the filtrate is cooled and crystallized, and the crystallized solution is centrifugally dried to obtain 5-amino-o-cresol (dye intermediate). 5-amino-o-cresol is a non-toxic and permanent hair dye intermediate, which is harmless to human body. The production method of 5-amino-o-cresol has the advantages of low cost, little pollution and favor.
