What is 4'-Methylpropiophenone?
4′-Methylpropiophenone is a chemical reagent with aromatic ketones. Aromatic ketones are phenylacetone with a methyl group on C-4. It is used as an intermediate of medicine and synthetic raw materials, and also for electro carboxylation reaction.
It is reported that 4′-methylpropiophenone can be used in the synthesis of pharmaceutical compounds, such as topidone and other muscle relaxants. The substance is also the starting material for the synthesis of 4-methylmethcathinone (Mephedrone). Mephedrone is considered a “legal drug” and is disguised as cocaine (in powder form), MDMA (in tablet form) and adulterants in the illicit drug market. According to the European drug market report 2016 released by the European Monitoring Center for drugs and drug addiction (EMCDDA), Mephedrone created specific demand and occupied its own unique market share.

- 4′-Methylpropiophenone is a chemical reagent used in Electrocarboxylation reaction.
- 4′-Methylpropiophenone is an intermediate of naomaining, which can be used as an organic synthesis intermediate and pharmaceutical intermediate. P-methylphenylacetone is mainly used in laboratory research and development process and chemical production process.
- 4′-Methylpropiophenone is used in the synthesis of agrochemicals and dyes.
- 4′-Methylpropiophenone is used as an industrial reagent in papermaking and pharmacy.
4′-Methylpropiophenone can be used for synthesis:
- N – (4-chlorophenyl) – n ‘- [1 – (4-methylphenyl) propyl] urea as a potential crac channel inhibitor.
- Mononuclear and trinuclear cobalt oxime / organic cobalt oxime complexes are used as effective catalysts for the synthesis of cyclic carbonate.
- Tolperisone (TOL) is catalyzed by an acid reaction with piperidine hydrochloride and 1,2-dioxolane.

Synthetic Method of 4'-Methylpropiophenone
The chiral adsorption inducer alkaloid was used to induce p-methylpropiophenone to fix carbon dioxide and electrosynthesize α-7, yl-α-hydroxy-4-methyl-phenylacetic acid.
The high yield and certain ee value were obtained by galvanostatic electrolysis and high performance liquid gun. The factors such as electrode material, current density and inducer were preliminarily investigated.
It was found that when the ring stainless steel was used as the cathode, the magnesium rod was used as the sacrificial anode, tetrabutylammonium iodide was used as the electrolysis support salt, 0.016g cinchonine was used as the inducer and the temperature was 0 ℃, the current density was 1,1 mA·Cm-2 constant. The current electrolysis can obtain a yield of 37.39% and an ee value of S-32.78%.
