What is 4-Fluorobenzaldehyde?

Preparation of 4-Fluorobenzaldehyde

- 110.5g of p-fluorotoluene is added to 500ml of difluorotoluene, and chlorine gas is continuously fed into the middle to carry out chlorination reaction, and the progress of the reaction is controlled by GC tracking method, so that the content of monochlorobenzyl product is less than 2%, and the content of trichlorobenzyl product is less than 2%. less than 10%.
- Add 6.9g of FeCl3+ZnCl2 catalyst to it, then heat up to 130°C, add 1.7ml of water to initiate the reaction for hydrolysis, and control the temperature to reflux at 130°C.
- Add water dropwise in the there-necked flask, make the complete hydrolysis of dichlorobenzyl product.
- After the reaction finishes, adjust the pH value to 8.0～9.0 with a concentration of 30% sodium hydroxide solution, then leave to stand for stratification.
- Adding 10% hydrochloric acid to adjust the pH value to 5.0-7.0, adding toluene to extract the organic layer.
- Finally, the solvent was spin-dried, the product was dried, and the organic layer was rectified to obtain p-fluorobenzaldehyde.
The yield of p-fluorobenzaldehyde was 80%.

A novel method for preparing p-fluorobenzaldehyde by catalytic oxidation of hydrogen peroxide, specifically comprising the following steps:
- Add 110g of p-fluorotoluene into the reaction bottle, and add 2.0g of BPO (benzoyl peroxide) as an initiator.
- Slowly add 8g of bromine dropwise, drop a small amount first, observe the color of the bromine source fade before continuing to drop in, then slowly heat up to 90-95°C under stirring.
- Keep the temperature and slowly add 300ml of hydrogen peroxide with a concentration of 30% dropwise. After the dropwise addition, keep the temperature of 90-95°C and continue the reaction for 2 hours.
- Add a small amount of 15% sodium sulfite aqueous solution after the reaction to eliminate oxidation.
- Then add 400ml of toluene to the system, stir for 0.5 hours, separate the toluene layer and the water layer.
- The aqueous layer was extracted with 3×100ml toluene, then merged into the toluene layer, dried by adding sodium sulfate, filtered, and the toluene solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure.
- Continue to rectify under reduced pressure the residue of the toluene solvent with a rectifying column to obtain 101 g of p-fluorobenzaldehyde with a yield of 81%.
