Phenylalanine is a precursor of tyrosine, a monoamine signaling molecule of dopamine, norepinephrine, and adrenaline, as well as melanin of skin pigments. Phenylalanine is naturally found in mammalian milk. It is used in the manufacture of food and beverage products and as a nutritional supplement known for its analgesic and antidepressant effects. It is a direct precursor of the neuromodulator phenethylamine, a commonly used dietary supplement. The human body cannot synthesize phenylalanine by itself. It must be taken from the diet. Generally, phenylalanine is produced by plants.
