What is Potassium Sulfamate?
Potassium sulfate (US) or potassium sulfate (UK), also known as potassium sulfate (SOP), augite or ancient sulfur potassium salt, is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula of K 2SO 4. It is a white water-soluble solid. It is usually used as fertilizer to provide potassium and sulfur.
Known as Arcanum Duplicatum (“double secret”) or panacea in pre-modern medicine, it is made of nitrate (potassium nitrate, potassium nitrate, KNO 3) and sulfuric acid oil (sulfuric acid, H 2SO 4) through mirabilite process:
2 KNO 3 + H 2 SO 4 → 2 HNO 3 + K 2 SO 4
The residue is dissolved in hot water, filtered and evaporated into stratum corneum. Then let it crystallize. It is used as a diuretic and sweating agent.
According to Chambers’ encyclopedia, the recipe was purchased by Charles Frederick, Duke of Holstein GoTop, for 500 tales. Schroeder, the Duke’s doctor, wrote down the miracle of its great use in hypochondriac cases, persistent and intermittent fever, stones, scurvy and so on.
Potassium Sulfamate Uses
- The main use of potassium sulfate is as fertilizer. K 2SO 4 does not contain chlorides harmful to some crops. Potassium sulfate is the first choice for these crops, including tobacco and some fruits and vegetables. If the soil accumulates chloride from irrigation water, crops with low sensitivity may still need potassium sulfate for optimal growth.
- Crude salt is also occasionally used to make glass. Potassium sulfate is also used as a flashover agent in gun propellant charge. It reduces muzzle flash, rebound and explosion overpressure.
- Potassium sulfate is sometimes used as an alternative shot blasting medium similar to soda in soda blasting because it is harder and similar to water solubility.
- Potassium sulfate can also be used in fireworks, which combines with potassium nitrate to produce a purple flame.
