Product Description

Beta Carotene CAS NO 7235-40-7

Red purple to dark red crystalline powder, slightly specific odor. Soluble in acetone, chloroform, petroleum ether, benzene and vegetable oil, insoluble in water, propylene glycol and glycerin, difficult to dissolve in methanol and ethanol. The solubility in olive oil and benzene was 0.1g/mL, and the solubility in chloroform was 4.3g/100mL, and the high concentration was orange-red, and the low concentration was orange to yellow. It is stable in the range of pH 2 ~ 7 and is not affected by the reductive material, but the light and oxygen are unstable, and the iron ion will cause the color to fade.

Nutritional supplements and pigments. According to the “hygiene standard (1993)” issued by the ministry of health of our country, it can be used for cream and puffing food, with the maximum use of 0.2g/kg. The physiological function of 0.6 mu g is equivalent to 1 international unit (I·U·) vitamin A. Is now widely used as a yellow pigment instead of tar oil soluble pigment, as originally used to contain carotene butter, cheese, mayonnaise, etc., and is widely used in other edible oil, margarine, shortening, pastry, bread, etc. Used for oily food, often dissolve in cottonseed oil and other edible oil or suspense preparation (content 30%). After dilution, even if used, it can prevent the oxidation of beta-carotene. It is commonly used to add alpha-tocopherol, stearyl ascorbic acid esters, BHA and other antioxidants. Used as a small amount of pigment, such as 1.37mg/kg for margarine. Combined with vitamin C in juice can improve stability.

What is Beta-Carotene?

β-carotene (β-carotene) belongs to carotenoids, it is ubiquitous in nature and is the most stable natural pigment, is an orange fat-soluble compound, shiny rhombohedral or crystalline powder, It mainly comes from natural foods such as green plants and yellow and orange fruits. Dilute solutions of β-carotene are orange-yellow to yellow, orange at increasing concentrations, and may be slightly reddish due to solvent polarity.

The richest sources of beta-carotene are green leafy vegetables and yellow or orange fruits such as carrots, spinach, lettuce, potatoes, sweet potatoes, broccoli, cantaloupe, etc. Beta-carotene is fat-soluble, and its fortified dosage forms are usually capsules and gels.

The antioxidant activity of β-carotene is mainly manifested in its ability to scavenge free radicals. The β-carotene molecule contains multiple double bonds, which are easily oxidized in the presence of light, heat, oxygen and free radical ions with strong activity, thereby protecting the body from damage. There are a lot of lipid peroxidation and free radical reactions in the organism, which leads to the decline of cell function, the aging of the body and the occurrence of diseases. The presence of β-carotene can reduce lipid peroxidation. Therefore, the activities of carotenoids to scavenge free radicals and quench singlet oxygen have received widespread attention.

Beta-Carotene Uses

  1. For the care of the visual system.
    Rod cells in the retina contain rhodopsin and function as scotopic vision. An appropriate amount of β-carotene can promote the normal content of rhodopsin, thereby avoiding the slow adaptation of dark field caused by lack of vitamin A, and avoiding the damage to the eyes caused by strong light after dark field. In addition, it can prevent night blindness, dry eye, corneal ulcer and keratomalacia;
  2. Health care for skin tissue.
    VA is necessary to maintain the integrity of all epithelial tissues, and β-carotene can be converted into VA in the human body. Therefore, ingesting a certain amount of beta-carotene is of great significance for maintaining normal body surface, digestive tract, respiratory tract, genitourinary tract, and endocrine tract, and can avoid flaky skin, keratinization, and scaly epidermal cells. Symptoms, polyhorny hematoma xerosis and other skin diseases. β-Carotene also has a good effect on the stability of cell membranes. It can also be used to treat “sunburn”, an inflammation caused by sun exposure.
  3. Delay aging.
    Beta-carotene can increase the activity of red blood cells. Peroxide free radicals can accelerate the aging of the human body, which is vividly called the “garbage” of the body. And β-carotene can neutralize peroxidative free radicals in the body, which plays a role in delaying aging;
  4. Resist bad environment.
    Those who often work in a dark room, strong light, high temperature or deep water environment, as well as radiation operators, and people who often watch TV should supplement β-carotene to resist adverse environments.
