What is 3-Chloropropionitrile?
Propiononitrile, 3-chlorine is a colorless liquid with a unique pungent smell. For the synthesis of drugs and polymers.
Melting point -51 ℃, boiling point 175-176 ℃ (decomposition), 85-87 ℃ (2.67kPa), relative density 1.1573, refractive index 1.4360, flash point 75 ℃. Miscible with alcohol, ether, acetone, benzene and carbon tetrachloride. The solubility in water at 25°C is 4.5g/100ml. Has a spicy smell.
3-Chloropropionitrile is an organic compound with the chemical formula C3H4ClN. Colorless liquid, prepared by the reaction of hydrogen chloride and acrylonitrile. It is used commercially as a precursor of the drug famotidine.
3-Chloropropionitrile is an alkylating agent, as shown by its reaction with imidazole to form cyanoethylated imidazolium salt. Similarly, it alkylates thiourea during the formation of 3-mercaptopropiononitrile.

Production Method of 3-Chloropropionitrile
It is derived from the reaction of acrylonitrile with hydrogen chloride. Under cooling, the dry hydrogen chloride was passed into the acrylonitrile, the hydrogen chloride was quickly absorbed and reacted, and the aeration was stopped when the reaction solution gradually increased in weight to the theoretical amount. The 68-71°C (2.13kPa) fraction was collected by distillation, washed with 10% sodium carbonate, and dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate. Re-distillation and take 70-71 ℃ (2.13kPa) fraction to obtain finished product. Yield was 80%.
