What is 2,6-Dimethylphenol?
2,6-Xylenol (or 2,6-dimethylphenol, DMP) is one of the six isomers of xylenol. It is a colorless to almost white crystalline solid with sweet tar smell. Soluble in ethanol, ether, chloroform, benzene and alkali solution, slightly soluble in water. It is incompatible with alkali, acyl chloride, acid anhydride and oxidant. Corrosive to steel, brass, copper and copper alloys.
2,6-Dimethylphenol is a monomer for industrial production of polyoxyxylene, which is synthesized by oxidative coupling reaction between carbon and oxygen.
